In an unexpected free agency move, veteran All-Star DeWanna Bonner is reportedly signing with the Indiana Fever, per ESPN’s Alexa Philippou. Bonner, a shooting guard/small forward, will join Indiana as a free agent after five seasons with the Connecticut Sun.
Bonner, 37, has 15 WNBA seasons under her belt, and is a six-time All-Star and two-time WNBA champion. She will bring veteran experience to a Fever team with several young key players — such as Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston.
Despite speculation Bonner would head to the Phoenix Mercury — where Bonner spent the first decade of her career and where her fiancée, Alyssa Thomas, now plays — the veteran is going to the Fever instead. As part of the signing, Bonner will be reunited with Fever head coach Stephanie White, who left the Sun to return to Indiana in December.
With Bonner leaving, the Connecticut Sun have now lost their entire 2024 starting lineup in the offseason. Thomas and Ty Harris are headed to Phoenix after a trade, while DiJonai Carrington is reportedly going to the Dallas Wings as part of a trade. Brionna Jones, the other starter, is signing with the Atlanta Dream as a free agent.
The Sun will likely be in a rebuilding year in 2025 under new head coach Rachid Meziane, who replaced White. The Fever, meanwhile, are having a strong offseason so far, re-signing Kelsey Mitchell to a supermax contract and receiving Sophie Cunningham as part of a three-team deal.
