Victor Wembanyama has shared insights from his time at the Paris Olympic games last summer and how it has influenced his preparations for Year 2 in the NBA.
“It’s difficult to win games in the Olympics,” he remarked, as reported by ESPN. “But it’s very easy to lose games.”
Wembanyama entered the NBA amidst high expectations and pressure, but he remained composed.
However, the Olympics presented a new challenge for him.
“It was perhaps the most intense sports experience of my life,” Wembanyama commented on his Olympic journey. “I felt privileged to have the opportunity to live through those moments. I felt a sense of pride too. Throughout all the elimination games, we were completely focused for 40 minutes thinking only about the next play. As a team, this level of concentration builds something significant towards a common goal. The emotions were overwhelming, to the point where you just had to let it out, whether by screaming or shedding a few tears. It was an intensity that could not be contained.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich believes that Wembanyama will benefit greatly from his intense experience with the French team.
“He showed steady improvement throughout the Olympics and became a formidable force,” Popovich noted. “His aggression and physicality were key factors. He has grasped what is required, what he will face, and how to respond effectively. FIBA basketball is much more physical. The Olympic experience was a valuable learning curve for him. He really shone as the competition progressed. He even scored 26 points against the USA team in the Finals. It was reminiscent of a David Robinson performance because I didn’t realize he had scored that much, which speaks to Victor’s versatility.”
As Year 2 progresses, Wembanyama maintains that the pressure hasn’t changed much, and the ultimate goal remains to secure victories.
“I handle these expectations just like I have for years,” Wembanyama affirmed. “I focus on fulfilling my responsibilities. I am grateful for the recognition of my abilities. Winning and elevating my teammates are always my top priorities. The focus remains on winning and improvement, much like in previous years. Last year, our goal was to learn and understand our strengths. This year, the expectation is to succeed and achieve victories.”
