Warriors Face Uncertainty After Assistants Weigh in on Steve Kerr

The Golden State Warriors have dealt with major roster and coaching questions this season, and now the spotlight has turned to head coach Steve Kerr’s future. A report says “multiple assistant coaches” within the Warriors organization have been operating under the assumption that Kerr will not return next season. These assistants are reportedly surveying the league to secure jobs for the future, signaling growing internal doubts about Kerr’s long-term commitment.

Kerr is in the final year of his contract, and he has not signed a new deal yet. He has remained publicly quiet about whether he plans to stay or step aside after this campaign. The assistants’ stance suggests that uncertainty extends beyond fan chatter and may be shared inside the Warriors’ walls.

A Season of Shifts and Setbacks

This development arrives amid a season filled with challenges for the Warriors. They lost Jimmy Butler for the season to a torn ACL, leaving a void in scoring and leadership. Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are still playing at a high level, but both are in the later stages of their careers.

The club sits 25-20 on the year and still hopes to climb the Western Conference standings. But questions about Kerr’s long-term future complicate the outlook. Many analysts expected Kerr to carve out a timeline tied to Curry and Green’s final years. Now, that plan might shift.

In 11 seasons with the franchise, Kerr has amassed a 592-328 record and four NBA titles. Under his leadership, Golden State became an NBA dynasty and reshaped the modern game through its shooting and motion offense.

What Assistants Saying It All Might Mean

The fact that assistants are already looking ahead suggests they foresee coaching changes. Some staff members have begun exploring openings around the league for next season. That doesn’t guarantee Kerr will walk away, but it does show that the people closest to him are bracing for a transition.

One recent departure was longtime assistant Chris DeMarco, who left to become head coach of the WNBA’s New York Liberty. That move may reflect deeper shifts within the staff and canary-in-a-coal-mine thinking about stability or lack thereof.

What Comes Next for the Warriors

Golden State now faces a crucial stretch of the season before the Feb. 5 trade deadline. As the front office navigates trades and rotations, Kerr’s future could play into roster strategy. If Kerr does not return, the team must prepare for a new voice and potentially a new direction. Whether Kerr ultimately stays or steps aside, his legacy in Golden State already ranks among the NBA’s most influential coaches of the 21st century.
