Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers has had such great success against Gerrit Cole that New York Yankees fans have started questioning the decision to pitch to him.
During the Yankees’ 7-1 loss on Saturday, Cole seemed to adopt this mindset.
In Devers’ first at-bat in the top of the first inning, Cole hit him with the second pitch. While it may not have been intentional, it was a way to avoid pitching to him.
In Devers’ second at-bat in the top of the fourth inning, Cole chose to intentionally walk him, with one out and a 1-0 game, to once again avoid pitching to him.
