As the founder and owner of 2x Inc. women’s basketball agency, Jeanne McNulty-King has seen it all during her more than 20 years on the job.
She recently shared some of her experiences with Swish Appeal. We spoke about her college career at Montana, playing pro ball overseas in the early 1990s, becoming an agent and her experiences providing services for her clients.
McNulty-King also dropped addition agenting wisdom, discussing how to build contacts, as well as what athletes should look out for when deciding on an agency. Some highlights from our talk include:
On why women athletes need representation designed for women athletes:
The men’s game makes much more money, so, in my opinion, if an agent is representing men and women, I think it’s just human nature that their focus will go to the male, simply because they’re making their money there. And men are much more demanding, there’s a lot more to it. That’s why it’s important to have somebody who isn’t in it just for the money, but is in it to take care of the women.
On what athletes need to look out for when deciding on an agent:
I would ask for a client list and I would talk to some athletes. The basketball world is so small and intertwined that everybody knows somebody. I would question athletes that [the prospective agencies] have on what they like and they don’t like. A big red flag, but it’s just changed, is when an agent tries to charge a player overseas, because the team pays the commission. The team pays me 10 percent and I split that with my partner, if I’ve used a partner, and it shouldn’t cost the athlete anything. But it was recently changed and now the teams no longer can pay agents, so that whole dynamic will change.
