During the WNBA offseason, many players travel overseas to play for other professional leagues in order to maximize their earnings. This is especially true for free agent guard Chennedy Carter, who had a breakout season in 2024.
One concern for players who play overseas is the risk of injuries that could impact their WNBA season. Unfortunately, Carter’s fears came true on Friday night. While playing a game in Wuhan, China against the Henan Phoenix, Carter was hospitalized after receiving a shoulder blow to the chest.
“After last night’s game, Chennedy Carter experienced rib pain and difficulty breathing. A post-game hospital examination confirmed a sternum contusion. Carter will be under daily observation by the team,” Wuhan Shengfan reported on Saturday.
Carter was defending a drive on the court when she collided with the offensive player trying to enter the paint. The offensive player was called for a travel, but it’s uncertain if Carter had to leave the game due to her injury.
Wuhan won the game against Henan 78-75. In their previous game on Thursday, a victory of 86-73 against the Phoenix, Carter scored 40 points, along with nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.
