The upcoming period marks the beginning of significant work for Chicago Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca.
Despite finishing in 10th place with a record of 13-27 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2018, the 2024 season was a success for the franchise. The Sky acquired two promising rookies in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, recovered most of the lost draft capital from former coach/GM James Wade, and laid a strong foundation for a multi-year rebuild.
However, the success of the season hinges on future moves. Now, Pagliocca and the Sky front office are entering a pivotal offseason with a deep free-agent market and two crucial draft picks. Here’s what to expect in the next six months for the Sky.
1. Will the Sky re-sign Chennedy Carter?
Despite having two standout rookies, Carter emerged as the breakout star for the Sky. She had a remarkable season, averaging 17.5 points, 3.1 assists, and 1.1 steals while shooting 48.7% from the field. While Carter hasn’t committed fully to returning to Chicago, she expressed interest in staying with the team during her exit interview.
The Sky have the option to match any offers Carter receives in free agency, and given her impact, it’s likely they will do so. Pagliocca praised her performance and emphasized her value to the team.
2. What about the rest of the unsigned players?
Five other Sky players will become free agents: Isabelle Harrison, Brianna Turner, Diamond DeShields, Michaela Onyenwere, and Dana Evans. While Evans and DeShields are unlikely to return, Onyenwere is a priority for re-signing due to her contributions on and off the court.
3. Whom should the Sky target in free agency?
