With legendary San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich taking a sabbatical from the San Antionio Spurs since November after suffering a stroke, according to Hardwood Heroics, there has been talks of Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon replacing Popovich as the Spurs head coach.
Popovich is currently the longest-tenured coach in the NBA.
Mitch Johnson is currently filling in for Popovich. Eventually, the Spurs front office has to make a decision on who should replace him should he ultimately decide to announce his retirement.
There are many replacements on the list to replace him, including Hammon, who learned under Popovich’s tutelage.
During a Q & A luncheon with David Chancellor, Hammon expressed her thoughts in deep detail on the possibility of replacing him.
Hammon said, “I’m always open to entertaining [a] different idea,” Hammon said. “I’ve not gone on interviews, I’ve told teams no. That’s just where I’m at. It’ll have to be the right fit, the right opportunity at the right time in front of the right people.”
Hammon then went on to express her happiness with her current job as the Aces coach, “If it happens, what’s for me is for me,” Hammon added. “And when it’s time, it’ll happen if it’s supposed to happen.”
Becky Hammon was hired as the Las Vegas Aces head coach in 2021. She has gone to build a winning culture. In her three years, the Aces have won back-to-back WNBA championships (2022 and 2023).
Prior to becoming the head coach of the Aces, Hammon served as an assistant coach under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio.
