The Dodgers’ decision to bring up River Ryan to their major league pitching staff is becoming clearer.
After pitching four innings in an Arizona Complex League game on Tuesday, Ryan allowed one run, four hits, and one walk. He managed to strike out five of the 16 batters he faced.
The Dodgers do not plan for a Triple-A pitcher like Ryan to remain in the lower levels of their minor league system for an extended period. According to Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic, the Dodgers intend to bring up Ryan after the All-Star break, which concludes on Thursday. So, when can we expect to see the 25-year-old right-hander in a Los Angeles jersey?
As Eric Stephen from True Blue LA pointed out, only five times this season has a Dodgers pitcher started on four days’ rest, with the last being Tyler Glasnow on June 9. This suggests that it is unlikely for Ryan to make his debut before Monday when the Dodgers face the San Francisco Giants.
Ryan is considered either the No. 1 or No. 2 prospect in the Dodgers’ farm system, depending on the ranking source. His debut is highly anticipated, similar to Bobby Miller’s debut a year ago.
Since he is not currently on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, a corresponding move will need to be made before Ryan’s promotion, likely on Monday.
The Dodgers acquired Ryan from the Padres in exchange for Matt Beaty in a trade in 2022.
