We’re one week away from the Seattle Seahawks’ preseason opener. I’ve traveled from Portland to Seattle to attend the mock game at Lumen Field, which functions as a dress rehearsal of sorts for the three-game exhibition slate.
It’s safe to say that there is no quarterback competition, with Geno Smith comfortably ahead of Sam Howell and P.J. Walker for the starting spot. There are, however, a lot of undecided roster spots and starting jobs across multiple positions.
The offensive line is anything but decided on the interior. If Abe Lucas ever gets healthy any time soon, the starting tackle spots are decided between him and Charles Cross. Center? Olu Oluwatimi and Nick Harris are battling, but you never know if Connor Williams could swoop in after his recent visit and join the fold. Left guard may be Laken Tomlinson’s, but there’s the chance for rookie Christian Haynes to switch from right guard to left guard in case he doesn’t win the RG spot against Anthony Bradford.
At wide receiver, we know that Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are locks as the top three options. Jake Bobo seems fairly safe at No. 4, but then there’s a crush of competition that includes Cody White, UDFA Hayden Hatten, Dee Eskridge, and Laviska Shenault Jr.
On defense, the most interesting camp battle is at cornerback. Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen are just about guaranteed to be starters, but Tre Brown is trying to keep his starting spot over Mike Jackson Sr and rookies D.J. James and Nehemiah Pritchett. Will Coby Bryant remain a corner/safety hybrid, or is there something else the new Seahawks coaching staff has in mind?
Decisions, decisions…
