Since its inception in 1997, the WNBA has showcased some remarkable performances in basketball history. A limited number of WNBA players have achieved a triple-double, where they reach double-digit figures in three of five statistical categories (assists, blocks, points, rebounds, and steals) during a single game.

Let’s delve into the timeline of triple-doubles in the WNBA, highlighting the players with the most recorded.

How many triple-doubles have been recorded in the WNBA?

There have been a total of 41 triple-doubles in WNBA history, encompassing both regular season (36) and postseason (5).

Who was the first player to achieve a WNBA triple-double?

Sheryl Swoopes made history by notching the WNBA’s inaugural triple-double on July 27, 1999. The Houston Comets star, a four-time WNBA champion and three-time WNBA MVP, tallied 14 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists in an 85-46 victory over the Detroit Shock.

Swoopes also became the first player to register a triple-double in both the regular season and playoffs. She achieved this feat with 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 75-58 triumph against the Seattle Storm in Game 3 of the 2005 Western Conference semifinals.

How many WNBA rookies have secured a triple-double?

Caitlin Clark etched her name as the first rookie in WNBA history to achieve a triple-double, posting 19 points, 12 rebounds, and 13 assists for the Indiana Fever in an 83-78 victory over the New York Liberty on July 6.

Clark went on to secure her second career triple-double on September 4, accumulating 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 93-86 win against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Who holds the record for the most WNBA triple-doubles?

Alyssa Thomas leads the pack with 14 triple-doubles in WNBA history (11 in the regular season). Thomas is the lone WNBA player with multiple triple-doubles in the playoffs, achieving all her triple-doubles as a member of the Connecticut Sun.

How many players have recorded multiple triple-doubles in WNBA history?

Eight WNBA players have secured multiple triple-doubles in their careers, including Thomas (14), Sabrina Ionescu (4), Candace Parker (3), Clark (2), Chelsea Gray (2), Courtney Williams (2), Courtney Vandersloot (2), and Swoopes (2).

Who holds the record for the most triple-doubles in WNBA playoff history?
