The 2024 WNBA All-Star Game in Phoenix this Saturday is missing a key component.
The 12-member Olympic team and the league’s All-Star rosters are scheduled to face off, with Cheryl Reeve of the Minnesota Lynx coaching Team USA.
Phoenix Mercury, the host team, announced that Pitbull will be the halftime performer, but Team WNBA’s coach is still unknown.
Typically, the All-Star coach is chosen based on the top team records at the halfway point of the season, which would be Sandy Brondello of New York Liberty or Stephanie White of Connecticut Sun.
However, Brondello is coaching Australia in the Olympics and may not be available for the All-Star Game. Becky Hammon of Las Vegas Aces is also being considered.
Although the Aces are on a hot streak, Brondello is still in the running for Team WNBA’s coach.
This year’s format of Team USA versus Team WNBA is the second time since the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In previous years, player-selected rosters were used, similar to the NBA’s format.
From 1999 to 2017, the WNBA All-Star Game coaches were chosen from teams with the best records for the East vs. West All-Stars.
