Last year, Sheryl Swoopes lost her former USA Olympic teammate and friend Nikki McCray Penson after her battle with breast cancer. In honor of Nikki, Swoopes partnered with RadNet, a national provider of diagnostic imaging services, to combat breast cancer.
This collaboration led to an All-Star brunch in Phoenix, where Swoopes reunited with basketball friends and offered on-site mammograms for attendees outside the Phoenix Suns’ training facility. Some took advantage of this opportunity.
Expressing her fondness for Nikki, Swoopes highlighted the importance of breast screening and early detection to potentially save lives. As a highly accomplished basketball player, Swoopes emphasized the significance of raising awareness and being proactive about health.
Swoopes, a decorated athlete, emphasized the event’s mission to bring attention to breast cancer awareness and encourage women, especially within the African American community, to prioritize their health.
Former players and WNBA personalities attending the All-Star Game festivities availed of free screenings offered by a pink mobile unit. Notable attendees, including sports media personality Cindy Brunson and former player Monique Ambers, lauded the convenience and accessibility of the event.
McCray Penson was remembered for her defensive skills, and attendees expressed their excitement for the growing support and talent in women’s basketball. The event served as a platform to celebrate former players and promote the sport’s progress.
Reflecting on the current state of the WNBA, Swoopes commended the league’s growth and recognized the efforts of former and current players in shaping its success.
