The Washington Wizards are actively trying to trade Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas, and reports indicate that acquiring the experienced player will not be a cheap endeavor for any interested team. While the Wizards are not insisting on a first-round pick in exchange, they are looking for multiple second-round picks for Valanciunas.
Wizards Trade Rumors: Washington’s Demands for Jonas Valanciunas
According to reports from The Athletic’s Josh Robbins and David Aldridge, the Wizards may only receive two second-round picks in a potential trade for Valanciunas. While Washington is open to trade offers, finding a deal that aligns with the team’s long-term goals may prove to be challenging.
If Washington hopes to move Valanciunas before the February 6 deadline, they may need to adjust their asking price. Valanciunas, who has played 38 games (eight starts) this season, is currently averaging 11.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 55.8% from the field and a career-high 91% from the free-throw line.
Valanciunas, aged 32, signed a three-year, $30.3 million contract with the New Orleans Pelicans in the offseason as part of a sign-and-trade deal with Washington.
Looking ahead, Valanciunas will earn just under $10.4 million next season, with a non-guaranteed salary of $10 million for the 2026-27 season. His salary for the 2026-27 season will become fully guaranteed on June 29, 2026.
Potential Trade Destination: Los Angeles Lakers
Despite being an affordable veteran center, the weak market for traditional centers poses a challenge for the Wizards in trading Valanciunas. However, the Los Angeles Lakers could be a suitable trade partner as they have the assets to meet Washington’s demands.
Following the Lakers’ acquisition of Dorian Finney-Smith, reports from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto suggest that Los Angeles is interested in using their second-round picks to acquire a backup center, with Valanciunas being a top target for the team.
If the Wizards manage to trade Valanciunas before the deadline, Marvin Bagley III would likely step into the backup role behind starting center Alexandre Sarr, who was the second overall pick in the draft.
