The No. 1-seed New York Liberty bounced back in Game 2 of the 2024 WNBA Finals to even up the series after a historic comeback by the No. 2-seed Minnesota Lynx in Game 1.
New York secured an 80-66 victory at home, led by Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s impressive 20-point performance. Breanna Stewart also stood out with 21 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and seven steals, setting a new record for steals in a WNBA Finals game.
Despite efforts from players like Naphessa Collier and Courtney Williams, the Lynx couldn’t close the gap in the fourth quarter, resulting in their lowest point total of the playoffs with 66 points.
How New York responded
Sabrina Ionescu led the charge for New York, scoring 12 of her 15 points in the first quarter to give the Liberty a 31-21 lead after the opening frame.
The first half saw both teams exchanging baskets, with Bridget Carleton and Collier contributing for the Lynx while Laney-Hamilton and Stewart kept the Liberty ahead by 10 points at halftime.
New York maintained their lead throughout the third quarter, despite a brief surge from the Lynx. Stewart’s late scoring spree secured an eight-point advantage for the Liberty heading into the final quarter.
The Lynx fought back in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to just a few points with clutch plays from Kayla McBride and Williams. However, New York sealed the deal with a series of key baskets, ending the game on a twelve-point run.
Laney-Hamilton’s stellar performance and New York’s strong finish proved to be the difference-maker in Game 2. The Liberty now look ahead to Game 3, where they will aim to continue their momentum against the Lynx.
