With the WNBA’s free agency period about to officially start on Feb. 1, we need to acknowledge how wild things are about to get. With a new CBA set to be negotiated after the 2025 season, many players will opt to sign one-year deals.
And already, there have been TWO blockbuster trades! The first saw Jewell Loyd go to the Las Vegas Aces, Kelsey Plum to the Los Angeles Sparks and the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft to the Seattle Storm. Alyssa Thomas going from the Connecticut Sun to the Phoenix Mercury was another huge shock. And Brittney Griner will leave the Mercury to sign with the Atlanta Dream. There is also a new team in the mix, with the Golden State Valkyries heading into the free agency period ready to spend some cash.
Safe to say, the WNBA is going to look very different in 2025. So, let’s try to prepare for what’s to come.
A few weeks ago on Raptors HQ, I pulled a few tarot cards to preview a game. Like I did there, I will start with this disclaimer: I am NOT A PROFESSIONAL TAROT READER. I am simply a girl with a deck of tarot cards. I play around with them for my own personal enjoyment. This is meant to be joke-y and fun, not a serious prediction.
So, what are tarot cards? They are cards that some use in divination practices, with each card having meaning that the reader interprets based on questions they ask the deck. It’s all up for interpretation. Like regular cards, there are suits, but there are also other cards. (Google more about tarot if you’re interested.)
Here is how it will work. I have my tarot cards with me as I write, and as I shuffle them I will ask some questions in regards to the 2025 WNBA season. Then I will pull a card, and outline the general meaning of the card before interpreting how I connect it to the question I asked. Simple enough! Let’s pull some cards…
Question 1: What should fans be prepared for heading into the 2025 WNBA season?
Card: Ace of Cups
General Meaning: The Ace of Cups encourages the reader to let go of any baggage you may be carrying with you, and instead live life to the fullest. The Aces suit, this card represents fresh starts and beginnings. Open up to possibilities, and release those things that no longer serve you. YOU need to be the one to take the cup and drink from it.
Interpretation: This card is making me think all about new beginnings, and the WNBA is getting lots of them. A new team with Golden State entering the league, and Toronto and Portland preparing to join in 2026. Players are moving around more than ever with free agency signings and trades, and the league’s next generation of stars is being drafted while some of the greats retire.
Like it or not, this is not the WNBA of the past. The league is entering a new era, transforming into something new. If you expect it to feel exactly like it has in the past, you may be disappointed. With growth sometimes comes criticisms, and 2024 was filled with them. Fans should put the arguments and toxicity of last year behind them and focus on what is ahead. Come into the 2025 season with an open mind, and accept that this league is changing by the minute.
Question 2: What will the energy surrounding the WNBA be like this season?
Card: The World
General Meaning: The World is a “Major Arcana” card, which means it represents big feelings, emotions and moments. Some keywords associated with this card, in particular, are completion, achievement, fulfillment, belonging, wholeness and harmony. It represents unity, when the inner and outer worlds connect. All the efforts that have been put towards a goal have been worth it, and it is paying off. It means taking this success and using it to try and make the world a better place.
Interpretation: Man, what a great card to pull when thinking about where the WNBA is right now. After years of growth, we are living in the pay off of all that work. Expansion teams are finally here. Players are getting paid more by sponsors. Unrivaled offers players a new offseason opportunity. A legendary CBA will be negotiated later in the year. The outside world is finally understanding what those who have followed the WNBA for years know: This league is special. There is still a lot of work to be done, but now that work can be turned to helping others in need, instead of just surviving.
There is also something to be said about the flexibility players now have with their own contract choices and free agency moves. The feeling of belonging and fulfillment comes when you are with a team that wants you—and you want to be there. It’s special and will only help these players grow more, both on and off the court.
Question 3: In the future, what will people remember about the 2025 WNBA season?
Card: Nine of Pentacles
General Meaning: MONEYYYY. For real though, the Nine of Pentacles represents a person who has reached the point in their lives where they have done the hard work and can enjoy money, leisure and comfort. They are confident, independent and self-sufficient. This card represents freedom, security and material wealth. Yet, the reader knows what it took to get here, and the spiritual value of the work they put in. The reader also needs to keep in mind the importance of community and relationships.
Interpretation: In relation to this question, this card made me immediately think of the upcoming collective bargaining agreement. Hopefully, these players are about to get PAID. Soon, the days of NEEDING to play in the offseason, especially overseas, will be over for those who no longer want to take that path. The WNBA itself will see growth in income and investment. Again, hard work pays off—and this year will be the year people remember it coming to fruition.
