6-foot-7 Chicago Sky rookie Kamilla Cardoso faced off against 6-foot-9 Phoenix Mercury great Brittney Griner in an exciting matchup. Both players are dominant forces in the paint, with Griner acknowledging Cardoso’s potential as the future of the game. Their first meeting took place in Chicago on Thursday.
After a month-long break due to the Olympic Games, the Sky returned to action against the Mercury. Missing key players like starting guard Chennedy Carter and recently traded Marina Mabrey, the Sky struggled to find their rhythm. The Mercury took an early lead in the first quarter, ultimately winning the game 85-65.
Cardoso played well, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds with an impressive 62.5% field goal percentage. Griner led the Mercury with 23 points and nine rebounds, shooting 83% from the field. Despite Griner’s strong performance, Cardoso held her ground defensively and earned respect from Griner for her efforts.
