The WNBA offseason has started, bringing more activity than usual this winter. With the upcoming expansion draft to complete the Golden State Valkyries’ roster and an unusually high number of coaching changes, things are definitely shaking up.
Following the departure of Christie Sides from the Indiana Fever on Sunday, seven out of the league’s 13 teams are currently without a coach: the Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Dallas Wings, Fever, Los Angeles Sparks, Washington Mystics, and Connecticut Sun. Notably, these teams were among the five worst performing teams in the league last season.

When the Dream brought on Tanisha Wright in 2021, they were looking for a leader to professionalize their operations. Wright managed to improve the team’s defense and lead them to the playoffs in the last two seasons. Despite adding top draft picks like Rhyne Howard, the Dream still struggled with their offense. With the team plateauing, a new direction was needed.
One of the most surprising coaching changes was the Sky’s decision to let go of Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season. Weatherspoon formed a strong bond with Rookie of the Year runner-up Angel Reese, leading the team despite talent drain and injuries. Concerns about her experience and attracting free agents led to the change.
The Wings saw improvement under Latricia Trammell, achieving their best season in over a decade. However, a streak of injuries halted their momentum and put them in the lottery for the first time since 2021. With the potential for a franchise-altering winter, the Wings opted for a fresh start.
