The WNBA and Delta Airlines have forged a long-term partnership to uphold the league’s charter flight program following a successful inaugural year.
After persistent efforts, the league teamed up with Delta to launch its initial charter flight program for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, allocating around $50 million from the commission to fund the initiative.
Under the newly announced multiyear agreement, the charter flight program will transport all 12 of the league’s teams during the regular season and playoffs.
Delta is set to be recognized as the WNBA’s Official Airline Partner.
For years, many athletes have voiced concerns about the safety of using commercial flights for travel, citing the need for bodyguards, lengthy security lines at airports, and cramped conditions for players with an average height of 6 feet.
The NBA introduced its charter flight program back in 1997.
“We’re delighted to collaborate with the WNBA, where each game embodies our shared values of teamwork and perseverance,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. “We are excited to support these remarkable athletes on their journeys and advance Delta’s backing of women’s sports.”
Commissioner Cathy Engelbert expressed her enthusiasm for propelling the WNBA to new heights through the extended partnership.
