WNBA Finals MVP Jonquel Jones has been named the Nassau Guardian Senior Female Athlete of the Year for the second time in the last four years. Jones ended the voting process just one point ahead of world record holder and world indoor champion in the women’s 60m hurdles Devynne Charlton, 44-43.
She received two of the three first-place votes while Charlton got the other. In her third trip to the WNBA Finals, Jones and her New York Liberty beat the Minnesota Lynx three games to two in October, winning the decisive game five 67-62 in overtime at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Jones was fantastic, averaging 17.8 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals in the five-game series to be named MVP, becoming the first Bahamian to win the best player award of any championship series of a major sports league in the United States. Now, she has a WNBA Finals MVP trophy to go along with the league MVP title she won in 2021 while representing the Connecticut Sun.
For the season, Jones averaged 14.2 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, helping lead the Liberty to the number one overall seed in the WNBA playoffs. They went through the Atlanta Dream in the first round of the WNBA playoffs, winning that series two games to none, disposed of the two-time defending champions Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals three games to one, and then went the distance against the Lynx.
