WNBA free agency: Indiana Fever set to retain Caitlin Clark’s key teammate

However, a key priority for the Fever is persuading Kelsey Mitchell, a vital part of the team, to stay. Although Mitchell is set to become an unrestricted free agent, the Fever have the option to designate her as a core player, a move they are expected to make.

Fever GM Amber Cox emphasized Mitchell’s importance, stating, “Kelsey Mitchell is our top priority heading into free agency. She is a cornerstone of this franchise and deserves to be part of the upcoming success.”

The core designation would grant the Fever exclusive negotiating rights in exchange for a one-year supermax salary, estimated at around $249,000 for the season. This move theoretically prevents Mitchell from engaging with other teams, but the Fever could still allow discussions or arrange a sign-and-trade deal.

According to IndyStar, Fever’s new president Kelly Krauskopf is confident that Mitchell will remain with the team. She highlighted Mitchell’s successful partnership with Caitlin Clark and believes that the duo is essential for the team’s success.
