In 2012, I began covering the WNBA by reporting on a few Washington Mystics games for DC Sports Box. Though not extensively covering the entire league, I was familiar with Maya Moore. Two years prior, in 2010, I supported my school’s women’s basketball team at Maryland. I was aware of Moore’s dominance with UConn, winning back-to-back national championships. Joining forces with other talented players, Moore secured the 2011 WNBA championship with the Minnesota Lynx, who were heavy favorites for a repeat in 2012.
When I started writing for Swish Appeal in 2013, I was tasked with covering the Indiana Fever at the White House instead of the expected Minnesota Lynx.
Tamika Catchings led the Fever to an upset victory over the Lynx in the 2012 WNBA Finals, completing a legacy of deep playoff runs, culminating in a championship. Despite a playoff streak extending to 12 seasons post-2012, including multiple Finals appearances, the Fever have continued to thrive.
