WNBA insider highlights two key reasons for Chennedy Carter not receiving qualifying offer from Angel Reese-led Chicago Sky

The Chicago Sky and their star rookie, Angel Reese, failed to secure a playoff spot in 2024. Following a disappointing 13-27 season, Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca may be considering significant changes in the offseason.

As the signing period approaches, one of the main concerns is the contract of fifth-year guard Chennedy Carter. Carter, a restricted free agent, had a strong season leading the team in points and ranking third in assists. Last season, she averaged 17.5 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.1 apg, and 1.1 spg, making her a vital part of the Sky lineup.

Reports from WNBA reporter Annie Costabile indicated that Chicago extended qualifying offers to Michaela Onyenwere, Dana Evans, and Nikolina Milić, but omitted Carter from the list.

In a recent article by Costabile for the Chicago Sun Times, concerns were raised about Carter’s commitment to the team and its culture, potentially influencing the Sky’s decision not to offer her a contract.

Chicago holds the third overall pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, providing an opportunity to secure talented guards like Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Olivia Miles.

Teams have until Jan. 20 to make qualifying offers and assign “core” designations before negotiating deals with free agents starting on Jan. 21. Free agents can officially sign contracts with teams on Feb. 1.

The Sky recently hired Tyler Marsh as their new head coach, aiming to build a competitive roster around young stars Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso by potentially signing established stars in free agency.

Chicago Sky, led by Angel Reese, will be seeking to add star talent in the upcoming free agency period.

During a recent media session at the women’s basketball tournament Unrivaled, Reese expressed her desire to bring back talented guard/forward Kahleah Copper to the team, showing her admiration for the four-time All-Star.

Kahleah Copper previously played 224 games for the Chicago Sky between 2017-2023 before joining the Phoenix Mercury last season, where she averaged 21.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, and 2.3 apg.
