In professional sports, a coach often receives more blame when things are going poorly and less credit when things are going well.
However, during the 2024 WNBA season, several head coaches have proven themselves deserving of credit for the success of their teams: Cheryl Reeve of the Minnesota Lynx, Teresa Weatherspoon of the Chicago Sky, and Sandy Brondello of the New York Liberty. They are all in the running for Coach of the Year based on their performances halfway through the season.
Cheryl Reeve (Minnesota Lynx)
Cheryl Reeve has the Minnesota Lynx back in contention for a championship after a period of rebuilding. The team has made strategic roster upgrades and players like Courtney Williams and Alanna Smith have thrived under Reeve’s guidance. Existing players like Kayla McBride, Bridget Carleton, and Cecilia Zandalasini have also improved significantly. Reeve’s coaching style emphasizes ball movement, 3-point shooting, and strong defense, leading the Lynx to success.
The Lynx lead the league in 3-point shooting and defense, boasting a 15-6 record and the Commissioner’s Cup Championship. Reeve’s ability to maintain the team’s performance in the face of challenges, like Napheesa Collier’s injury, proves her coaching prowess.
Reeve’s potential as Coach of the Year hinges on how well the Lynx continue to perform, especially if Collier remains sidelined.
Teresa Weatherspoon (Chicago Sky)
Teresa Weatherspoon has revitalized the Chicago Sky, turning a team with low expectations into a competitive and cohesive unit. Players like Angel Reese and Chennedy Carter have thrived under her coaching, showcasing their talents and improving their game.
Weatherspoon’s ability to empower her players, hold them accountable, and foster a winning mentality has been instrumental in the Sky’s success. However, for her to secure Coach of the Year honors, the team will need to improve their record and performance further.
Sandy Brondello (New York Liberty)
Sandy Brondello has expertly led the New York Liberty, a team with high expectations, to success. Despite having a talented roster, Brondello has managed the team effectively and improved their performance in both offense and defense.
Players like Jonquel Jones, Sabrina Ionescu, and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton have excelled under Brondello’s coaching, contributing to the Liberty’s strong season. Brondello’s ability to guide the team through challenges and maintain a competitive edge positions her as a deserving candidate for Coach of the Year.
While regular season achievements are important, the ultimate judgment of the Liberty’s success will come in the postseason. However, Brondello’s impact throughout the season should not be overlooked, making her a strong contender for a second Coach of the Year award.
