The Atlanta Dream (7-16) are eagerly awaiting the month-long Olympic Break.
Having lost seven consecutive games, they are set to finish this tough stretch with a game against the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday (1 p.m. ET, League Pass). Based on their previous matchups, Atlanta is likely to face another challenging result. Minnesota dominated in late May with a 92-79 victory and in mid-June with a 68-55 win.
Regardless of Wednesday’s outcome, the Dream will find themselves in ninth place, currently out of the playoff standings. With no first-round draft pick for 2025, there’s little solace for their frustrated fans.
Injuries have been a major factor in Atlanta’s struggles. Rhyne Howard is expected to make a return after missing 10 games due to an ankle injury. Jordin Canada and Aerial Powers have also been sidelined, contributing to the team’s challenges.
Offensive struggles in ATL
With key players out with injuries, Atlanta’s offense has struggled. Their league-low average of 75.0 points per game has worsened during their losing streak to 72.9 points per game.
Even with Howard in the lineup, the team’s offensive rating hasn’t been impressive. The lack of offensive flow and creativity has been a major issue for the Dream.
The importance of difference-making defense
Defensively, the Dream have held their own without their star players, with a 101.1 defensive rating. However, they miss the defensive impact that Howard and Canada bring.
Howard and Canada’s ability to create turnovers can significantly improve Atlanta’s transition offense. The team struggles to convert turnovers into points, highlighting their need for defensive playmakers.
Atlanta’s difficulty in translating defense into offense showcases the challenges they face in all aspects of the game this season.
