There seems to be a divide between ethnicities in the WNBA and among fans ever since Caitlin Clark joined the league, but Sue Bird, a 13-time All-Star, says that this division has existed for many years.
On her podcast A Touch More, Bird stated, “The things that have hindered women’s sports include racism, sexism, and homophobia, among other things. This is the starting point and the lens through which we must view many of these issues.”
Bird emphasized, “Racism has been a problem in the WNBA long before this year. This is not a recent development. Caitlin did not introduce racism to the WNBA. It has existed for a long time. It is surprising to see others act surprised about it. We have been trying to raise awareness about this issue for a while.”
Some members of the media are trying to place the blame on Clark and her supporters for bringing racism into focus within the WNBA, but Bird believes the issue runs much deeper and this mindset needs to change.
“This mentality has to go because it is not just about a few Fever or Caitlin fans,” Bird explained. “It involves a larger group of people. Let’s focus on the Fever fans for a moment. There is a significant portion of that group pushing racist agendas, spreading hate, and causing division online while posing as fans of the Fever or Caitlin.”
