Both Lindsay Whalen and Eric Thibault are starting a new chapter in their careers by joining the coaching staff of the Minnesota Lynx.
Interestingly, both coaches have deep connections to the organization they are now a part of.
On Monday, Minnesota officially welcomed Whalen and Thibault to Cheryl Reeve’s coaching staff, with Whalen as the assistant coach and Thibault as the associate head coach.
Both coaches are eager to get started and already feel at ease with their decision to join – or rejoin – the organization.
Returning to Roots
Whalen’s connection to Minnesota and the Lynx is undeniable. She is considered one of the state’s best players, having spent nine of her 15 WNBA seasons with the Lynx, winning four championships during a dominant dynasty period.
After retiring in 2018, Whalen closely followed the Lynx, especially during her time as the head coach of the University of Minnesota women’s basketball team.
In 2024, Whalen’s interest peaked, attending many Lynx games and closely observing their playoff run. This reignited her passion for the game, making joining the Lynx coaching staff a logical choice.
Speaking about the opportunity, Whalen expressed her excitement and eagerness to work with the players and staff, praising the team’s chemistry and energy.
After a break from coaching, Whalen realized she missed being on the court and in the gym, making her return to the game even more rewarding.
Whalen and Reeve have a strong bond, and they are both thrilled to elevate their relationship to a new level as coach and mentor.
Reeve commended Whalen’s legendary status within the franchise and expressed excitement about working together on the same coaching staff.
New Beginnings
After leaving the Washington Mystics, Thibault, following a disappointing tenure, seeks a fresh start with the Minnesota Lynx coaching staff.
Thibault is familiar with many in the Lynx organization, including Whalen, and admires the team’s culture and competitive spirit.
Impressed by the Lynx’s playing style and teamwork, Thibault is enthusiastic about joining a group with similar values and goals.
Thibault’s family has close ties to Whalen, with his dad drafting her in 2004 and his sister coaching alongside her at the University of Minnesota.
Excited about the prospect of working with the Lynx, Thibault believes his values align with the team’s and is eager to contribute to their continued success.
Thibault’s experience and familiarity with the organization make him a valuable addition to the coaching staff, strengthening the Lynx team moving forward.
Reeve is excited about adding both Whalen and Thibault to the coaching staff, recognizing the unique strengths each brings to the team.
Overall, the future looks bright for the Lynx under the guidance of these experienced and passionate coaches.
