The Phoenix Mercury did not give the Dallas Wings a chance to make a comeback on Monday. The Mercury had a 102-72 victory over the Paige Bueckers-led team. The star of the night was veteran shooting guard, Sami Whitcomb. The two-time WNBA champion had a career-high, 36 points on 7-for-11 shooting from deep.

It was Whitcomb’s night on Monday, as she started the game on fire from downtown. In the first quarter, the undrafted shooting guard had 19 points on 4-for-5 shooting from downtown. The Wings couldn’t stop her, as she kept making shots.

Her team relied on her hot hand and kept giving her the ball.

Following the win, the WNBA took notice of Whitcomb’s best scoring night and made an announcement on X. The league also recognized her All-Star teammate, Alyssa Thomas. The six-time All-Star recorded the 12th triple-double of her career with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 15 assists.

“The Phoenix Mercury defeat the Dallas Wings 102-72 to move to 13-6,” the league posted. “Sami Whitcomb went off for a career-high 36 PTS, 7 3PM, 6 REB, & 2 STL. Alyssa Thomas recorded her 12th career triple-double with 15 PTS, 10 REB, & 15 AST!”

Whitcomb’s previous career-high was 30 points. She had it during the 2021 WNBA season, against the Atlanta Dream. At that time, she was still with the New York Liberty.

This season, she’s one of the veteran leaders of the team, averaging 9.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Whitcomb is also making 35% of her shots from downtown. The former Washington star and the Mercury will resume their season on Wednesday as they face the Minnesota Lynx.
