Washington Mystics owner Sheila Johnson expressed her views on Caitlin Clark during a recent interview, questioning the recognition she received as TIME Magazine’s Athlete of the Year.

Clark’s statement about racial privilege in her acceptance resonated with many.

Johnson believes that highlighting only Clark is detrimental to the long-term success of the league.

She emphasized the need to appreciate and recognize the contributions of all talented players in the league.

Caitlin Clark was honored with TIME’s Athlete of the Year award for 2024 earlier this week

“Caitlin Clark was named [Time Magazine] Athlete of the year. Why couldn’t they have put the whole WNBA on that cover and said ‘The WNBA is the league of the year’?”

Johnson expressed concern about the media’s role in elevating Clark’s popularity at the expense of other talented players in the league.

She emphasized the need for recognition and respect for all players’ talents.

Johnson commended Clark for her acknowledgment of racial privilege in her success.

Clark’s recognition marked a historic moment as the first WNBA player to receive the ‘Athlete of the Year’ award.
