The 2025 WNBA Free Agency could possibly become the biggest offseason change for stars like Jewell Loyd, Satou Sabally, Kelsey Plum and Britney “BG” Griner who could be playing for different teams this summer.
All four of these all-stars have built amazing careers with their current teams and can be a huge asset to any team that plans to make improvements from last season.
The chance of seeing these stars move to new teams will bring excitement for the fans, the franchise and the league which is planning to exit the current CBA agreement where free agency will shake up the players contracts next year. As the offseason continues to kick off, lets break down the scenario of how the player movement will help or impact teams producing interest to the stars during free agency.
Loyd, a former number one pick, two-time champion, three-time all WNBA selection and six-time all-star has spent most of her career with the Seattle Storm building a culture of dominance and establishing herself as one of the best players in the league. Since Sue Bird retired in 2022 and Breanna Stewart left to play for New York in 2023, Loyd was cored by Seattle to become the new franchise player.
In the past two seasons, Jewell led the team with a career high average 24.7 ppg in 2023 and last season formed the new big three with all-star players Skylar Diggins-Smith and Nneka Ogwumike where the trio led the team back to the playoffs after missing out on last season.
Early December, Jewell announced on social media that she is requesting a trade from the Storm prior to the beginning of free agency. This statement comes as a shocker to many fans and the league who wonder how Loyd playing for another team other than the Storm will feel different.
“Loyd is one of the top veteran shooting guards in the league that knows how to score, facilitate her teammates along with playoff and championship experience. She can be a leader and starter for any team that may produce interest in her to accomplish franchise goals for the season. Las Vegas or Chicago may target Loyd in free agency since she has connections with both teams and may likely play for one of them.”
Sabally, German forward, All-Rookie team, and Most Improved Player of the Year has spent an up and down five seasons with the Dallas Wings trying to create an identity with the franchise. Satou has been hampered with injuries throughout her career with the team, but when healthy she gives the Wings versatility to stretch the floor.
Satou has officially made it clear towards recent media that she intends to not return to Dallas this summer and is working with the franchise to signed with another team after receiving a core qualifying offer last week. Sabally expressed her interest of playing with her sister Nyara in the future with New York. Sabally followed the Liberty throughout their playoff run as they accomplished winning the title and was part of the team’s parade.
“A Sabally sister reunion in New York would be special but the Liberty are going to have to sacrifice a player to trade for Satou with cap space being critical to the franchise trying to repeat as champs. Other teams that could go after Sabally maybe the Fever or the Mercury that are in need of a power forward.”
Griner, two-time defensive play of the year, 2014 champion, and six-time all-WNBA selection has called Phoenix home for her 11 seasons with the Mercury. BG is one of the tallest centers in the league with an unstoppable force in the paint and a threat on the offensive and defensive end.
For the first time in her career, Griner will be exploring the free agency market to see if she intends to play for another team or continue to play in Phoenix. With rumors of Diana Taurasi retiring, BG could become the next franchise player or look for a new start in her basketball career.
“Griner has always had love for the X-Factor in Phoenix where she has put on amazing accomplishments with the franchise. If BG was to leave Phoenix, she could join either the Aces to form the frontcourt duo with A’ja Wilson or return home to Dallas that is possible going to lose some players in her position.”
Plum, two-time champion, all-WNBA selection, and sixth woman of the year has played a pivotal role for the San Antonio/Las Vegas franchise with her grit mentality. She is known for her excellent three-point shooting and attacks the rim with confident to get to the free throw line.
The Aces extend Plum with a core qualifying offer, but she has not accepted yet and is considering leaving the franchise that drafted her with the number one pick. She has not made any decisions on if she will play for the Aces or start fresh with a new franchise but could be a target in free agency.
“Plum has an outstanding skillset that will help a team looking for a guard that can play on and off the ball with her veteran leadership and championship experience. I think if Plum would leave Las Vegas, she could possibly swap places with Jewell in Seattle where she is loved for her time at the University of Washington or return home to the newest franchise Golden State who is led by former Aces assistant coach Natalie Nakase.”
Unrestricted free agents can officially sign with their destined teams on Feb 1 where there can be some change or similarity for all the teams in the league. As free agents roll on, the wait to see a big star change teams will shock the offseason moves and create trends for the league.
