Many WNBA fans were hoping to see both Sabrina Ionescu (New York Liberty) and Caitlin Clark (Indiana Fever) compete in the 3-Point Shootout during All-Star Weekend in Phoenix. However, they both declined the invitation they received.
Both Ionescu and Clark were invited to participate in this year’s 3-Point Shootout, as reported by Chloe Peterson of the Indianapolis Star. Despite being exceptional shooters, they chose not to take part in the event.
According to Peterson, the WNBA confirmed that both Clark and Ionescu were invited to the 3-Point Shootout but declined the opportunity.
Both Clark and Ionescu will be in Phoenix this weekend for the WNBA All-Star Game. Clark will play for Team WNBA, while Ionescu is on the U.S. Women’s National Team roster.
Ionescu is also set to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Both Ionescu and Clark are among the top five players in the WNBA for made 3-pointers this season. Ionescu ranks fourth with an average of 2.8 made three-pointers per game, while Clark is fifth with 2.7 per game.
Ionescu has a three-point shooting percentage of 34.5%, while Clark’s is 32.7%.
The participants in the 3-Point Shootout include Marina Mabrey (Connecticut Sun), Allisha Gray (Atlanta Dream), Stefanie Dolson (Washington Mystics), Jonquel Jones (New York Liberty), and Kayla McBride (Minnesota Lynx).
Both Ionescu and Clark are entering the WNBA All-Star Game after remarkable performances. Ionescu scored 30 points in the Liberty’s recent win over the Connecticut Sun, setting a new franchise record with her 13th 30-point game.
Meanwhile, Clark achieved a WNBA single-game record with 19 assists in a game, leading the league with an average of 8.2 assists per game.
