Kansas City’s innovative CPKC Stadium has been selected to host the 2024 NWSL Championship, as announced by the league on Wednesday morning.
The stadium, which opened earlier this year, is the first venue built exclusively for an NWSL team. Throughout this season, the undefeated Current have consistently sold out the 11,500-seat capacity stadium for every home game.
This will be the first time that Kansas City hosts the NWSL Championship, and with the Current leading the league standings, they are likely to play in the match in November. The Current are one of only two teams that have not lost a game this season.
The 2024 Championship is scheduled for November 23rd, marking the latest final in NWSL history.
“CPKC Stadium embodies the rapid growth and investment we are seeing in the NWSL, women’s soccer, and women’s sports globally,” said NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman in a press release.
“Choosing a venue that showcases the impact of infrastructure, investment, and community support on the sport’s development and success was a natural decision for staging the league’s premier event.”
With a history of selling out home matches, it is highly likely that this year’s Championship game will be sold out. Last year’s final in San Diego set a Championship attendance record with 25,011 fans.
“The NWSL Championship is among the top global sporting events,” said Current co-founder and owner Chris Long. “We are thrilled that Kansas City and CPKC Stadium have been selected to host this prestigious event.”
