WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark is scheduled to appear at Ball State University’s Emens Auditorium for a discussion with esteemed Ball State Alumnus David Letterman on Monday, December 2 at 7:00 pm. The event is part of the David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series, initiated by the university in 2008.
The former host of the Late Show will be interviewing Ms. Clark, who recently started her WNBA career with the Indiana Fever after an impressive college basketball stint with the Iowa Hawkeyes, where she became the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer before being drafted as the WNBA’s No. 1 pick.
Ball State University President Geoffrey S. Mearns expressed excitement for the upcoming conversation, citing Letterman’s iconic status as a Hoosier and national figure, alongside Clark’s rapidly growing popularity and success. “David Letterman is our University’s most famous graduate. He is a native Hoosier and a national icon, and Caitlin Clark has quickly become a beloved Hoosier and national star,” said President Mearns.
In a show of support, Mr. Letterman attended an Indiana Fever game in August at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis to root for Ms. Clark during her debut season in the WNBA, later sharing photos of their meeting on social media.
Known as one of the most exceptional college athletes ever, Clark concluded her rookie WNBA year with multiple records, earning the title of Rookie of the Year and contributing significantly to the league’s rising popularity. Her standout records in the 2024 season included most points scored (769), most assists (337), and most 3-pointers (122), with her assists also becoming a WNBA single-season record.
Throughout the years, Mr. Letterman has made substantial contributions to Ball State, notably through the lecture series that bears his name. Past featured guests have included influential figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Rachel Maddow, and Biz Stone.
In May 2023, Mr. Letterman returned to Ball State for a screening of “Clear Reception with David Letterman,” a documentary focusing on the art of glass co-produced with Ball State students from various departments. Following the documentary screening, Mr. Letterman engaged in a discussion on stage with students who had worked on the project, along with Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville, collaborator on the Disney+ documentary “Bono & The Edge.”
Further details regarding ticket distribution for the upcoming conversation between Mr. Letterman and Ms. Clark will be disclosed at a later date.
