Whoopi Goldberg had some trouble pronouncing WNBA star Diana Taurasi’s name on Wednesday morning so, when the athlete herself took the stage, she got some payback by intentionally mispronouncing Whoopi’s own name.
As the ABC moderator attempted to tee up the segment, she mistakenly pronounced “Taurasi” as “Taurisi,” rhyming with “greasy.” Of course, the moderator caught her mistake immediately, in part because her co-hosts immediately chimed in to correct her.
“Thanks!” Whoopi said, clutching her chest from the sudden passion from the other women, largely led by Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin. “Why don’t you do it!”
Haines laughed at that, saying she didn’t actually want to do it, but Whoopi encouraged her to do so anyway. So in the end, it was indeed Haines who introduced Taurasi to the stage.
As the basketball player took her seat, the hosts all greeted her, with Whoopi noting it was good to see Taurasi.
“Good to see you Whippy — I mean Whoopi!” Taurasi replied, shaking her head as though she stumbled, which earned a huge laugh from the table.
The two quickly swept the flub under the rug, with Whoopi saying “That’s all right!” and Taurasi shaking her head and adding “It’s all good.”
“The View” airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
