Despite a breakout season and overseas success, Chennedy Carter remains unsigned – raising questions about her clash with Caitlin Clark and past team issues
Chennedy Carter, a former Chicago Sky guard and WNBA scoring standout, remains unsigned as the 2025 season approaches. Despite leading the Sky with 17.5 points per game last season, Carter’s free agency status has sparked discussions among fans and analysts, particularly in light of her on-court incident with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.
The tension between Carter and Clark reached a peak during a game in June 2024, when Carter delivered a hard foul on Clark before an inbound play. The league later upgraded the foul to a flagrant 1 after review. Clark, known for her composure, downplayed the incident, stating, “That’s just not a basketball play but gotta play through it.”
Carter, for her part, expressed no regrets about the foul, emphasizing her competitive nature. The incident, however, drew significant media attention and became a talking point in discussions about physicality in the WNBA.

“I’m a competitor, and I’m going to compete no matter who you are, and no matter who’s in front of me. So that’s just what it was,” Carter said. “Heat of the moment play. We’re getting at it. We’re getting back and forth. It’s basketball. It’s all hoops. After we finish the game, it’s all love.”
Beyond this incident, Carter’s career has been marked by both impressive performances and disciplinary issues. She was suspended by the Atlanta Dream in 2021 for conduct detrimental to the team and was later waived by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2023.
Reports indicated that prior to her suspension, Carter allegedly threatened to fight a fellow Dream teammate who had urged her to adjust her attitude during a game.
Despite these challenges, Carter’s talent is undeniable. In her rookie season with the Atlanta Dream, she became the youngest player in WNBA history to score 30 points in a game. Her scoring ability and on-court presence make her a valuable asset for any team willing to invest in her potential.
Carter signed with Wuhan Shengfan of the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association for the 2024–25 season, where she’s currently dominating as the league’s top scorer. Averaging 31.4 points per game, she also notched a season-high 44 points in a single outing.
As the new season approaches, Carter remains optimistic about her prospects. She has hinted at interest from several teams and continues to train in anticipation of returning to the court. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see where she will land and how she will continue to shape her WNBA legacy.
