Multiple reports indicate that Sabrina Ionescu had surgery last Friday on her right thumb to stabilize the ulnar collateral ligament. The New York Liberty star guard underwent the procedure to repair an injury.
On her 27th birthday, Ionescu shared a photo on social media showing her hand and thumb in a large cast. She hinted that she had the surgery as a birthday gift to herself, mentioning in the post caption, “ps: getting my thumb fixed was quite the bday present.”
ESPN’s Alexa Philippou reported that the surgery was successful, and Ionescu is expected to make her return to the court in four weeks.
Ionescu suffered the injury during Game 4 of the WNBA Finals, as reported by ESPN. The news of her injury came after the Finals, where the Liberty emerged victorious over the Minnesota Lynx in Game 5 to secure their first franchise title.
Dealing with the thumb injury, Ionescu struggled in Game 5, shooting 1-for-19 and missing most of her 3-point attempts, resulting in only five points.
Apart from winning the WNBA championship, Ionescu also received second-team All-WNBA honors and secured an Olympic gold medal this summer with USA Basketball.
