WNBA star rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese set new league records on Sunday, showcasing their impressive debut seasons.
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever, broke the rookie record for most assists in a season with 232 in a game against the Seattle Storm. The former Iowa standout achieved this milestone in just 28 games, with 12 games left in the season. The previous record was held by Ticha Penicheiro with 225 assists in 30 games back in 1998.
Clark expressed her gratitude for surpassing Penicheiro’s record, calling her a legend in the game.
Penicheiro acknowledged Clark’s achievement on social media, celebrating the growth and evolution of the game.
Meanwhile, Reese, the No. 7 overall pick by the Chicago Sky, set a new record by registering 20 double-doubles in just 27 games, making her the fastest player to do so in league history. She is closing in on the rookie record held by Tina Charles and the Sky’s franchise record set by Sylvia Fowles.
Both Clark and Reese have been consistent performers, with Clark winning the WNBA Rookie of the Month twice and Reese earning the honor once. They are top contenders for the WNBA Rookie of the Year award.
