The WNBA commemorated Caitlin Clark’s record-breaking rookie season on social media Friday.
Fans voiced their concerns about the post not accurately reflecting Clark’s total assists.
“Clark broke the single-season assist record with 321 assists and also set the all-time single-game assist record with 19 against the Dallas Wings,” the post stated.
However, Clark actually finished the season with 337 assists, establishing a new record.
One user criticized, “The account consistently provides incorrect information. Caitlin had 337 assists. How difficult is it to verify stats on your own platform?”
Another frustrated user commented, “Caitlin Clark had 337 regular season assists and an additional 17 from her 2 postseason games. Basic stats should not be so hard to get right.”
Many have requested that X include a community note in the post to clarify that Clark finished with 16 more assists than indicated.
Clark made a significant impact on the court during her rookie season, transforming her team’s fortunes and the WNBA landscape.
This year’s WNBA draft, where the Indiana Fever selected Clark as the first overall pick, drew an average of 2.45 million viewers, the highest in WNBA draft history, and was the most-watched WNBA telecast since 2000. Indiana initially struggled, losing 10 of its first 13 games, but Clark’s stellar performance ignited a remarkable turnaround for the Fever. They went on a four-game winning streak and finished with a 17-10 record in their final 27 games, securing a playoff berth.
Clark had a mix of performances in her first 14 games but showed more consistency in the later part of the season. She averaged 21.9 points and 10.5 assists over 19 games, recording at least a dozen assists nine times. She finished the season averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists (leading the WNBA), and 5.7 rebounds.
Clark set multiple rookie records in the WNBA and became the first rookie to achieve a triple-double twice. Her 337 assists were not only a rookie record but also the most by any player in a single season.
