Natalie Nakase, the newly announced head coach of the Golden State Valkyries, recently sat down for an interview with Swish Appeal.
Where did your habit of taking notes come from?
I’ve always been a visual learner, so I take notes to help me remember and refer back to what I’ve seen or heard. Whether it’s a game or a drill, writing things down helps me retain information better.
Is there a difference in coaching women versus coaching men?
Both men and women require the same level of practice and repetition. It’s not about gender, but rather about finding players who can help achieve the goal of winning a championship.
How do you view the challenge of establishing a winning culture with the support of the Golden State Warriors?
Having the backing of a successful organization like the Warriors is an advantage, not a pressure. The resources and winning culture they provide set us up for success.
What coaching lessons did you learn from your time in Germany?
Coaching in Germany taught me the importance of self-trust and belief. It was a valuable experience that helped me grow as a coach.
How did your injury impact your coaching style?
While the injury was challenging, it ultimately led me to coaching and provided me with a different perspective on the game.
How has your experience as a point guard influenced your coaching approach?
As a former point guard, I understand the importance of communication and leadership on the court, which has shaped my coaching philosophy.
What can your players expect from you during training camp?
I won’t be flaunting championship rings, as they need to earn their own success. We will focus on defense, organization, and hard work to prepare for the season ahead.
