CLEVELAND, Ohio — A new pro sports team will begin playing in downtown Cleveland in 2028. The city has won the WNBA’s 16th expansion franchise to begin play at Rocket Arena in 2028 under the ownership of Dan Gilbert.
It will be an encore for the WNBA in Cleveland. In 1997 the Cleveland Rockers had been one of the eight founding teams of the Women’s National Basketball Association.
They were owned by Cavs owner Gordon Gund and played in what was then called Gund Arena until 2003, when the team disbanded.
While the WNBA is back, it’s uncertain if the ‘Rockers’ name will return too, though it will be in contention. Could it be the CLE Rockettes? Supremes?
Cleveland.com reports that the franchise said it expects to have a name chosen within a year. The naming choice will be led by Grant Gilbert, Cavs Vice President of Basketball and Business Operations.
“Obviously Rockers is on the table, but ultimately we’re just committed to a thorough and thoughtful process that is ultimately going to result in a brand that’s incredibly reflective of Northeast Ohio and the community and all the other incredible facets of it,” said Gilbert. Will it be the Cleveland LeBronettes?
