In the early-season WNBL action, the Bendigo Spirit remains undefeated, while the Adelaide Lightning and UC Capitals are still searching for their first win. Standout player Sami Whitcomb from the Spirit is making a strong push for her first WNBL championship.
Sami Whitcomb leads the way
At 36 years old, Whitcomb is dominating the league with averages of 26.6 points and 4.6 made 3-pointers per game. Her exceptional playmaking skills, with an average of five assists per game, make her a key player for the Spirit. Alongside Kelly Wilson, who is excelling in playmaking at 40 years old, Whitcomb is proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
Despite playing for her third team in as many seasons, Whitcomb continues to push herself to new heights in pursuit of a WNBL championship. With two WNBA titles already under her belt and Australian citizenship since 2018, seeing Whitcomb succeed in her second home would be a fitting achievement in her illustrious career.
Shaneice Swain shines during Indigenous Round
In recognition of the Indigenous peoples of Australia, the WNBL will showcase Indigenous-inspired jerseys, referee uniforms, and basketballs during Indigenous Round starting on Nov. 20 and ending on Nov. 24.
One standout Indigenous player in the league is Shaneice Swain of the Sydney Flames. Drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2023, Swain, at just 21 years old, is making significant contributions to her team with impressive stats across the board. As a former unsigned draftee, the Sparks still hold rights to Swain, leaving room for optimism among the franchise’s fans.
A highly anticipated game during Round 4 will feature Swain and the Flames squaring off against the Perth Lynx on Nov. 23. The highlight of the round will be the Spirit facing off against the reigning champs, the Southside Flyers, on Nov. 24.
