SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Korin Baker led all scorers with 22 points, Lindsay Drango added 16 more, and the Whitman College women’s basketball team secured a dominant 73-50 win over Cal Lutheran at the UCSC Thanksgiving Classic.
The Blues (7-0) notched their sixth 20-plus point victory of the season, closing out the Classic with consecutive wins. The first win came against the University of La Verne where they scored a season-high 94 points.
Christiane Carlisle and Baker both grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, with Carlisle contributing eight points and Carly Martin adding 12 points and a game-high seven assists. Whitman’s superior shooting was evident, but their dominance on the boards was crucial. The Blues outrebounded their opponents by 13, including 14 offensive rebounds.
Alline Ballard led the Regals with 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Baker and Drango set the pace for the Blues early on, combining for Whitman’s first 10 points and giving their team a six-point lead with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. Martin then added to the lead with a three-pointer, extending the lead to 13-4. Holly Morgan’s jumper further increased the lead, and the Blues held a 12-point advantage heading into the second quarter.
Whitman’s dominance continued in the second quarter, keeping Cal Lu to single-digit scoring. The lead grew to 20 points with three-pointers from Carlisle and Natalie Lundberg, putting the Blues up 30-10 with 6:04 left in the quarter. Carlisle hit another three-pointer late in the second quarter, and the Blues entered halftime with a 23-point lead.
The lead expanded to 30 points in the third quarter as the Blues secured the victory to remain undefeated this season.
Whitman will kick off a series of six consecutive home games starting with the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, Dec. 12. The game at the Sherwood Center is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
