WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Carly Martin and Christiane Carlisle both scored a game-high 17 points and the No. 12 Whitman College women’s basketball team dropped a second-half haymaker en route to a dominant 67-33 win over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday night at the Sherwood Center.
Whitman’s defense was at an all-time best, allowing the fewest points in a game since a 107-33 win over Walla Walla University in 2019. Natalie Lundberg added 14 points and Korin Baker grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Brooke Samura scored a team-high 11 points for the Lutes who were held to 25% shooting and 18% in three pointers.
Whitman (10-1, 2-0 NWC) led by seven after the first quarter and 10 at halftime, but it was total domination by the Blues to start the second half that decided the game. They outscored PLU by 19 points in the third quarter and allowed only 11 points total in the second half.
Whitman opened the third quarter with back-to-back three pointers from Carlisle and Lundberg, then Carlisle completed an and-one three-point play to extend the lead to 17 points with 6:18 to play. It was then Martin’s turn to join the party as she scored eight straight points including two three pointers and the lead swelled to 27 points just over the midway point of the quarter.
Though nearly shut, Whitman closed the door in the fourth quarter as the lockdown defense continued to the final buzzer.
Whitman continues its early conference season homestand next weekend against Lewis & Clark and Willamette.
