MENOMONIE, Wis. – Korin Baker dropped game highs of 25 points and 12 rebounds and the Whitman College women’s basketball team dominated from start to finish en route to a 77-54 win over the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament held at Johnson Fieldhouse.
It was the fourth straight NCAA Tournament first round win for the Blues (27-1) who now play the winner of Ripon College and host UW-Stout on Saturday with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line.
With hopes of hosting the opening two rounds of the Tournament, Whitman showed no signs of a let down. They never trailed in the game, opening up a double digit lead in the first quarter after closing the period on a 9-2 run.
Baker carried the load for the Blues but a team defensive effort forced the Yellowjackets into a 37% shooting performance. Whitman also dominated the boards to the tune of a +32 rebound differential.
Carly Martin and Briana Andrade both chipped in 11 points with Martin adding five assists and Andrade corralling five boards.Â
Chloe Peterson led Superior (17-11) with 15 points and Charlotte Ferstl added 12 points and six rebounds.
After leading by 10 at the end of the first quarter, Whitman blew the game open in the second period and led 46-22 at the half. Leading by eight points, Lindsey Drango kickstarted a 13-0 run with a three pointer which Baker concluded with an and-one three point play.
The Yellowjackets failed to make a dent in the deficit in the second half as the Blues coasted to the win.Â
Whitman will tip off Saturday’s game at 7:15 p.m. CT (5:15 p.m. PT).
