WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Headlined by Korin Baker’s game-high 20 points, the Whitman College women’s basketball team displayed a dominant performance, with three players scoring 20 or more points, leading the Blues to a convincing 74-51 victory over La Verne at the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic held at the Sherwood Center on Sunday.
Lindsey Drango contributed nearly a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Blues (5-0), who dominated the Leopards in the paint with a 44-20 advantage. Carly Martin’s five three-pointers were part of her impressive 20-point, five assist performance.
Alyssa Smith led La Verne with 12 points, while Christen Ziska added 10 more.
The outcome was never in question. Martin went on a scoring spree from beyond the arc midway through the first quarter, starting with a three-pointer with 5:03 left. She followed up with two more in the next 1:15, completing a personal 9-0 run, and added another late in the quarter as the Blues kept La Verne scoreless for the final 4:32 of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the lead expanded to 20 points after a layup by Baker with 5:26 remaining. Later in the quarter, Briana Andrade, Martin, and Baker all contributed inside to push Whitman ahead 42-20, with the lead growing to as much as 24 points in the quarter.
The second half was smooth sailing as the lead never dropped below 20 points.
Following the game, the KER All-Tournament Team was announced, with Baker named tournament MVP and Martin and Drango also receiving all-tournament honors.
