ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Korin Baker was the top scorer with 19 points, while Christiane Carlisle made six three-pointers for a total of 18 points, leading the Whitman College women’s basketball team to a 74-69 victory over host Rochester in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament.
Carly Martin, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, contributed 16 points and five assists for the Blues (2-0), who shot an impressive 50% from the field and 47% from three-point range. The team’s defense was strong, once again holding their opponent to under 50 points for the second time and limiting the Yellowjackets to just 31% shooting. Carlisle also received all-tournament honors.
Abby Gress led Rochester (1-1) with nine points and seven rebounds.
Whitman started strong, hitting four of their first six shots, including three-pointers from Carlisle and Carly Martin. By the end of the first quarter, the Blues had opened up a 12-point lead with key baskets from Baker and Martin.
The team continued to dominate in the second quarter, holding Rochester without a field goal for over half of the quarter and extending their lead to as much as 21 points. With back-to-back three-pointers from Carlisle and Briana Andrade, Whitman went into halftime with a 21-point lead.
Whitman maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half, never letting Rochester come within 20 points. They finished with a 25-point margin of victory.
The Blues have one more game left on their New York trip, facing SUNY Geneseo on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1:00 p.m.
