Women’s Basketball Rallies Early Double-digit Win At George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Whitman College women’s basketball team used a dominant third quarter and a balanced scoring effort to pull away from George Fox for a 79-66 Northwest Conference road win Saturday afternoon at Wheeler Sports Center.. The Blues move to 9-6 overall and 4-2 in NWC play, while the Bruins fall to 8-7 and 4-2 in the conference.​

After a slow start that saw the Bruins score the game’s first 12 points but the Blues rallied and trailed 33-34 at halftime before outscoring George Fox 25-16 in the third quarter to seize control, then closed it out with a 20-17 edge in the fourth.​

The Blues shot 54.8 percent from the field and 80 percent at the free throw line, turning efficient offense into separation after the break.​

Emma Lena Baker added a game-high 17 points off 11-for-12 free throw shooting, while Sumi Leavell and Holly Morgan chipped in 13 points apiece to round out four Blues in double figures.​

The Blues’ bench outscored the Bruins’ reserves 32-13 and Whitman converted 28 of 35 free throw attempts to keep George Fox at arm’s length in the final minutes.​ Whitman finished 23-for-42 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from three, while holding George Fox to 38.5 percent shooting and just 3-for-21 from beyond the arc.​

The Bruins held a 42-22 edge in points in the paint, but Whitman answered with advantages at the line (28-13 in made free throws) and from its bench production.

After nearly two weeks on the road, the Blues return home for their upcoming games beginning with Pacific Lutheran this Friday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
