Women’s Basketball Tops CSB In Classic Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Whitman College women’s basketball team stayed perfect away from the Sherwood Center, grinding out a 66-57 win over the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon in the opening game of the Colorado College Thanksgiving Classic. 

Briana Andrade led the way with a career-best 17 points on a flawless 6-6 shooting performance from the field.​ Morgan Montgomery and Holly Morgan both added 11 points with Montgomery adding a team-best six rebounds. Andrade did much of her damage in key moments, scoring six in the first quarter to help Whitman build an early lead, then adding seven more in the fourth as the Blues put the game away at the stripe.​ 

Drew Buslee scored a team-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds for Saint Benedict (6-2).

The Blues led 29-24 at halftime and 44-39 after three quarters before outscoring the Bennies 22-18 in the fourth, fueled by repeated trips to the free throw line and timely buckets in the paint.​ Defensively, Whitman held Saint Benedict to 26% shooting and just 4-21 from beyond the arc, forcing 18 turnovers that turned into 18 points the other way. The Blues also dominated inside with a 32-18 edge in points in the paint and a 10-2 advantage in fast-break scoring, using their pressure and tempo to stay in front throughout.​

Jordan Leith and Emma Lena Baker combined for 16 points off the bench, giving Whitman (4-2) an important scoring lift in both the first and third quarters.​

The Blues conclude the Classic on Sunday against host Colorado College. Tipoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. PT.
