McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitman College women’s basketball team had only twice posted an undefeated conference record, but tonight’s win made it the program’s third and second in four seasons.Â
Korin Baker led the charge with 21 points and 15 rebounds and the fifth-ranked Blues capped a perfect Northwest Conference regular season with a 60-46 win at Linfield on Friday night.
Whitman (24-1, 16-0 NWC) had clinched a share of the league title two weeks ago but won it outright and locked in the top seed in the NWC Tournament with a win over George Fox one week ago.
The Blues shot a modest 40% from the floor but dominated the offensive glass with 19 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points. Carly Martin scored 16 points and Christiane Carlisle added nine more.
Allie Mead and Eve Burke led Linfield with 15 and 10 points, respectively. The Wildcats shot it better, but the Blues were stingy on the boards and limited Linfield to only nine second chance points.
The Blues trailed for a good portion of the opening quarter but ended the period on a 10-0 run spanning 4:26. Martin drilled a pair of three pointers in the run that ended with the Blues up 16-10.Â
Whitman kept up the pressure in the second quarter. Carlisle heated up from distance, drilling three three pointers as part of a 19-2 run and giving the Blues a 15-point halftime lead.
The NWC Tournament gets underway on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Sherwood Center. The tournament schedule including teams and game times will be forthcoming.Â
