IOWA CITY — Before Caitlin Clark transformational four years, the Iowa women’s basketball team had nearly been carried to a Final Four by a dominant force in the post.
Ava Heiden and Hannah Stuelke proved on Monday that, much like during Megan Gustafson’s tenure, that the Hawkeyes can put together another successful season by focusing on dominant play inside after spending the past five seasons being led by superior guard play. Heiden produced a career-high 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 21 Iowa to an 86-51 season-opening win over Southern on Monday night while Stuelke came within a board of joining Heiden in the double-double department, scoring 20 points while grabbing nine rebounds as Iowa outscored the Jaguars 48-16 in the paint while more than doubling Southern in rebounds with a 52-21 advantage on the glass.
